How to Prepare When Tornadoes Strike

survive in the wild

Prepare for the worst by planning ahead in case of a tornado. To ensure your safety, it's a good idea check the safety plan for your building. It's important to know where everyone is, including children in case of a severe tornado warning. It is a good idea to have a plan in place for how everyone will meet up once the disaster is over. Family members are always available for help. Don't panic, and stay calm.

Plan ahead

It is important to be prepared for tornadoes. First, be aware of where to shelter. If you are driving outdoors, move out of the way. Wrap your arms around your head and lower your body as much as possible. Do not use your car to escape from the tornado, but take shelter inside a sturdy building if you can. You should also alert your relatives and neighbors.

Do not get in a ditch.

Many chasers prefer to ride out a tornado in their car. You might wonder why you would want to do that. Tornadoes can cause havoc to vehicles even if they are stationary. You've probably seen pictures of crumpled cars and trucks wrapped around trees and covered in lethal debris. Getting into a vehicle gives you a layer of protection that other vehicles can't.

Avoid getting stuck in a drain ditch or canal.

If possible, shelter yourself in a sturdy building. If this is impossible, lay flat on the ground. Avoid bridges, overpasses, and other structures. Avoid being in direct sunlight when you are experiencing a tornado. Don't open your windows, as they won't protect you from the debris. In an emergency, it is important to keep your entire family together while you wait for help.

Protect yourself from falling objects

If a tornado strikes, you must seek shelter in an elevated building. Once you're inside, spread your body flat on the earth. Cover your head and arms with your arms. You can move to a lower level, such as the basement and a storage area. If you are in a large mall or store, move to an interior area away from windows and doors. Keep calm once you are inside.

Take shelter in a place called home

When a tornado starts to move through an area of land, it's essential to find shelter. As much as possible, seek shelter in a sturdy structure. Because elevators might not work or heavy objects could fall through the floors, it is best to stay at the lowest level. Bathrooms can also be used as safe havens. Keep your home safe from tornadoes.

Avoid taking refuge under bridges, overpasses, or in other places.

Avoid hiding under bridges and on roads that have been crossed by tornadoes. Although it may be tempting to climb up onto a bridge to get out of the rain, the wind and debris from a tornado can easily penetrate clothing, skin, or eyes. Climbing up an overpass can result in being thrown half-a-mile into the air and not being protected from falling debris. A narrow passage underneath an overpass can increase wind speeds, causing serious injuries or even death.

Avoid being trapped under a bridge or overpass during a tornado

Meteorologists warn against hiding under an overpass or bridge during dangerous weather conditions. Overpasses make a wind tunnel and increase tornado winds. This can launch deadly debris missiles. Oklahoma's tornado outbreak of May 3, 1999 is a perfect example of how dangerous it can be to shelter under an overpass. Tornadic winds can cause flying debris to pelt anyone huddled under. They can even blow them from their shelter, causing them to die.

How to Build a Fishtrap to Survive

A fish trap can be described as a device used to capture fish. It is composed of two parallel bars (the "trays") which form a funnel shape. The water flows through one trap end. Water collects at its bottom in the first tray. The water level rises as a result. As the water rises higher, it falls through the second bar, allowing the trapped fish to swim out.

Fish traps have been used since ancient times to catch salmon. They still function, but they can now be used to catch many kinds of freshwater catfish.

If you have access to enough water, it is possible to make your own fish trap. To line the trap's interior, you will need some type of material. If you don't have a lot of space, then you can buy a commercial fish trap kit online. These kits usually include everything you need except the materials to construct your trap.

Here are some guidelines to follow if you decide to build your own fishtrap.

  • So that the water doesn’t leak through the trap, make sure they are sturdy.
  • Choose a spot that gets plenty of sun to warm the water.
  • Avoid rough surfaces such as concrete and stone to trap sand particles.
  • Make sure there is no debris in the trap area so the fish can't get trapped.

Once you have built the fish trap, place it near the edge. You don't have to worry about the fish escaping. Just leave the trap alone for several days and they will start swimming in again. The trap shouldn't be cleaned as it should stay moist. You can always remove dead fish from the pond later if you find them.
