Beans

Beans are rich in fiber and protein. Their low fat and nutrient density make them an easy food to digest, cook and store. A cup of cooked beans has approximately 115 calories. A single serving of beans will provide you with 8 grams of protein while a single serving of dry beans will give you about 125 calories. A half cup of cooked beans contains about a third of the recommended daily allowance of protein for an adult man and woman who are not pregnant.

Canned foods are great for long-term storage and preparedness. Because they are so shelf stable, they can be eaten long after the date on the can. One recent study published by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration revealed that canned goods were safe to consume over a hundred years after they were made. Even though canned goods lost their texture, color and nutritional value over time they maintained high levels vitamins A and C.

What are the essential skills you should have in survivalist camping?

Prepare yourself for all eventualities when you travel on an adventure. It is important to be able to adapt to extreme situations.

You should also be prepared for all weather conditions, including cold winds and hot sun. These precautions could lead to your death.

How to Navigate Without a Compass, or with it?

Although a compass does not tell you where you're going, it can help you get back to your home in case you lose your bearings.

Three different ways you can navigate are available:

  1. By landmarks
  2. By magnetic North (using an compass).
  3. By stars

You recognize landmarks when you see them. They are trees, buildings or rivers. Landmarks provide visual clues to where you live.

Magnetic North simply means the direction where the Earth’s magnetic field points. You'll see that the sun appears as if it is moving across the sky when you look up. However, the earth’s magnetic field actually causes it to move around the Earth. So, while the sun seems to move across the sky, it really moves around the horizon. At noon, it is directly overhead. At midnight, the sun will be directly below you. Because the earth's magnetic field changes constantly, the exact direction of its magnetic North pole is always changing. This means that sometimes you may be off course for quite a while.

Another method of navigation is to use stars. Stars appear over the horizon to rise and lower. These are fixed points in time that you can use for determining your location relative others.

Why are basic survival skills important?

Basic survival skills include the ability to hunt, fish and make fire. These skills are vital no matter where you live. However, they are even more important when you travel alone or in remote locations.

Other survival skills include navigation, self-defense and wilderness medicine. These are life-saving skills that must be learned before you venture into the unknown.

These skills are not the only ones you should have. There are many valuable skills that can be useful when you're away from home. For example, if you plan on spending your vacation hiking through the mountains, learn some mountaineering techniques if you plan to go camping in the desert, learn how to survive in extreme temperatures. There are many ways to prepare for any situation. Don't be afraid to try new things and think outside of the box.
