In the wake of the wildfires in Arizona, volunteers from the American Hiking Society have been working on trail restoration and advocacy efforts. This week-long effort resulted in a beautiful, accessible area for hikers. The Arizona National Scenic Trail which spans over 125 mi has been severely damaged by the fires. Volunteer efforts are crucial to the recovery of this area, which has seen record visits and very little staff.

AHS Volunteer Vacations has contributed over 5,000 miles to the improvement of hiking trails. A group of six to ten volunteers makes up the group. Larger groups are accepted at times that are not COVID. Those who wish to be part of an AHS-organized trail service trip can request a crew through the Society's website. They will then join trail agencies and land managers to maintain the trails.

The NextGen Trail Leaders program has brought together rising stars from the outdoor community to help improve the country's trails. FAQ

What should you buy first when prepping

Be sure to have enough water for everyone during your trip. They are essential!

It is important to always have sunscreen lotion on hand. It doesn’t make a difference if you’re going on a hike or to the beach. You’ll still need it.

Do not forget to bring extra batteries to power your electronics. Last but not least, make sure to pack a few sunglasses. You won't know how much glare there will be until you get there.

What is the best-canned food for survival?

It is not always the most nutritious canned food. It may also depend on what you are looking for. For energy, go for beans. If you are looking for protein, choose meat.

You should look for high-quality nutrition if you are searching for nutrients.

My survival gear should be stored where?

Keep your emergency gear handy so you can quickly access it in an emergency. It is easiest to keep your supplies under your mattress or in a closet.

Make sure you label your supplies with the contents and date, so you know which ones you've used and which are still good.

Also, be sure to keep another copy of your inventory. If you lose your apartment or house, you will need proof you had the right stuff.

What are the essential things I should know before I start my doomsday preparation?

You will first need to find out information about your local area. What kind of natural disasters can happen in your region? Are there any significant risks?

Flood insurance policies are a good idea if you live in a flood area. Flooding is a threat to life that can occur during a crisis.

Consider purchasing tsunami insurance if your home is near the coasts. Tsunamis are caused by underwater earthquakes. They can strike without warning so it is best to be prepared.

Next, figure out how long it will take you to become self-sufficient. How long can you survive on your own?

Or will you be gone only for a few hours? Or will you be away from home for weeks or months?

Do you plan to live alone? If you are, you will need to bring a weapon. It doesn't really matter what type of weapon you choose, such as a gun or bow and arrow. Just make sure you're comfortable using whatever tool you decide upon.

Apart from weapons, you will also need tools such a saw, shovel, hammer and nails. These are tools that can be used to create shelters or makeshift weapons.

Finally, you'll likely want to stock up on extra food and water. You will need enough food to last several days.

This list is not exhaustive. You don't need to purchase all of the items. At the very least, you need to get started.

Are guns safe to keep?

Yes! Yes. Gun ownership is a right that the Second Amendment protects. But, not everyone can own guns. Persons with mental illness, for instance, are forbidden from owning firearms.

That being said, having a firearm in your home can save lives. According to the CDC there were 33,000 deaths from unintentional shots between 1999-2016.

The good news is that most states allow residents to carry concealed weapons. You still have the option to carry a concealed weapon, even though you're not allowed to possess one.

How do I prepare my house to war?

You must first make sure that all windows are tightly closed. You can then store everything that you have. You will need enough water and food to last you the day.

It is important to have an evacuation plan in place. You should immediately evacuate your home if there's any chance that it could be attacked.

If you do not, you could be dead!
