If you're going on a hike or camping trip, it is always a good idea to bring along a map and a compass. These skills are invaluable in situations where you might get lost or need help.

Depending on where you are hiking and your level of skill, there are many ways to use a map or a compass. In this article, we will explore some of the most common methods and help you to find your way in the wild!

Maps & Compasses

A map helps you see the world around you and to plan your course. It is useful as an aid to a compasse, which can be used find North and follow the intended route.

There are many different types of compass, but all have the same basic features: a base plate, a bezel (compass housing), a magnetic needle and orienting lines. The orienting line helps you align your compass to the grid lines of your map.

The magnetic north pole or Magnetic North is always the point of the compass needle. However, it can shift slightly each year. This is called declination. It can make it more difficult to navigate correctly.

Find a landmark, such as a body or mountain peak, to help you position your map. Line up one of the compass's back corners with the landmark, then rotate the bezel until its orienting lines align with your route.

You will also need to read a bearing between the edge and the base of your compass and where you are located on the map. A bearing refers to the direction of your position relative to a particular landmark. It is measured as the angle this line faces a baseline.

It is a good idea to always have a map and your compass with you. This will allow you to stay on the right path and prevent unnecessary trips off-trail. This is especially important for navigation in wilderness areas where electronics can easily become lost or damaged, and where even a minor error could spell disaster.

Triangulation

Triangulation, a technique that locates your position on a digital map is useful for those who are lost in the woods. This involves identifying and bearing to two landmarks (such a bridge, mountain, or lake end) from your location on the map.

These lines should be drawn on your map. At the intersection of your two bearings, you will find your approximate location. In most cases, you can use this method if the map is accurate.

You need two landmarks, at least 60° from one another. These landmarks can be seen by you from your position on Google Maps. These landmarks will be needed to take a bearing to point to your location on the map. Then, use the bearings to draw the line between the first and second landmarks, creating a triangle.

Triangulation can be used for determining the direction of a shot or satellite. It can also be used for navigation and surveying.

Finding Your Way

There are several options available to you if you get lost. You can get help from rescuers or you can try to return to civilization and your base camp by yourself.

Before you head out on a hike, make sure to map the route. You will need a backup plan if you get lost. This will allow you to quickly find your way back and prevent you from having to retrace all your steps if lost.

Time Checks & Landmarks

It is a good habit to mark major trail junctions or terrain features on your map. If you do get lost, you can easily retrace the steps and have a reference point to help you estimate how long it will take for you reach civilization.

Pace

Keeping track of your pace is also important for navigation. You can track your pace and take photos to capture the terrain you are walking through.

Another option is to practice using a compass. By choosing a landmark near you and walking straight toward it, this can help you to practice your compass. Using your compass can help you navigate if you lose your way.
